Literature (Essay) : The Pearl (2)

In Chapter 3 of The Pearl, did the main characters have different dreams? If so, what were their dreams and how did they differ?

In chapter 3 of The Pearl, the main characters do have different dreams. After the news of Kino finding the Pearl of The World was spread like wildfire to the people in village and town, the people started dreaming and hoping for what they want.

Firstly, the priest is dreaming that Kino will donate money to the church. He has been thinking while he is walking in the garden of all the repairs that are needed to be done to the church. He also wonders whether he has baptized Kino’s son, Coyotito or not. Besides, the priest also thinks that whether Kino and Juana had gone through church’s wedding or not.

Next, the news came to the shopkeepers. The shopkeepers are hoping that Kino will buy the clothes from their shops. This is because during that time, the clothes from their shops had not sold so well.

Thirdly, the news came to the doctor. When he knew who Kino is, he immediately claims that Kino is his client and he is treating his child for a scorpion sting. What a big fat liar he is. He starts reminiscing back his memories in Paris and begins to build castles in the air. He dreams of the room he had lived in there as a great and luxurious place. He also dreams of the hard-faced, kind and beautiful woman who had been spending time with him in Paris. In addition, he also imagines himself sitting in a posh restaurant in Paris with a waiter opening a bottle of wine for him.

For the beggars, they are actually happy and hoping that Kino will donate money and be concerned of them because they know that Kino hails from poor Mexican-Indian families. Whereas the pearl-buyers were thinking how could they owned the pearl with only paying him chicken feed. For donkey years, they have threatened the poor fishers until the poor fishers sold the pearl with extremely low price. The pearl-buyers also are thinking and figuring out who will replace the patron when he died and take charge.

Kino also has various hundred and one dreams. First of all, he sees himself standing and kneeling at the high altar with Juana and Coyotito by his side marrying in a church. The three of them are in seventh heaven during the red-letter day. Kino also sees that Juana is donning in new shawl, new skirt and a pair of brand new shoes. For himself, he dresses in white clothes and carries a fine black hat. He also wears laced-shoes. For Coyotito, Kino sees him wearing a blue sailor suit from United States and a little yachting cap on his head.

On top of that, Kino also dreams of having a harpoon which he always yearns for having it to replace the lost one a year ago. The harpoon is made of iron with a ring in the end of the shaft. Then, a desire of having a rifle suddenly pops out from his mind and he sees himself holding a Winchester carbine which he always hankers after one.

Lastly, Kino hopes that Coyotito will go to the school. He sees Coyotito sitting in a little desk in school through an open door. Coyotito wears a jacket and he has on a white collar and a broad silken tie. Kino also sees Coyotito was writing on a big piece of paper. He hopes that Coyotito will become literate and knows how to write, read and count numbers. He also dreams that his apple of his eye will read to Juana and him from a great book when they were squatting by the little fire in the brush hut. Kino is positive that the pearl will transform his hard and tough life to a life of a bed of roses.
